Hello! Our names are Ruben and Brenda Barrett, and for several years now we have been burdened with the idea of starting a new church here in Memphis. "A new church in Memphis?" you might ask. Yes. We believe that God has called us to cast a vision for and provide leadership to a new network of home fellowships that we call "Mid-South Church."
Abraham, Scripture tells us, by faith foresaw a city which didn't exist yet. And we can relate. Our dream is not yet a reality, but is in its conception stage. We anticipate 2010 to be a year of team-building and equipping as we continue to meet regularly and share our vision with people. Like Abram and Sarai, we feel like travelers on a journey of faith. We don't have all the answers. We don't claim to be experts. But we believe that God wants to do something special in our city and we desire to join Him in this adventure.
Please take some time and peruse our site to learn more about us. Unlike traditional church plants, we embrace a Simple Church philosophy which places emphasis on the home as a ministry center. Whether we call it simple church, cell church, organic church, or house church, we kow that the Church is supposed to behave more like a living organism, a family, rather than a business or corporation.
We have journeyed through several steps to bring us to this season. Recently we were commissioned as home missionaries with Ripe for Harvest World Outreach, and we have assembled a team of ministry advisors. We currently meet weekly for Bible study and plan to begin monthly gatherings as well soon. One part of our 2010 plans is that we are now seeking to raise partial financial support. We both teach part-time and I am also self-employed. I am devoting more time to the ministry and cutting back my hours in my business.
